American Football developed out of rugby, hence terms like touchdown, because in rugby you have to touch the ball down in the end zone to score. Soccer may have formed a governing body a few years earlier than rugby but the contact version predates the non-contact version. Soccer evolved from rugby because some clubs in the 19th century didn't like the hacking and physicality that marks out rugby and gradually altered the rules to get rid of it.
