The wrap is a safety issue. American football has the "smash" made (in)famous by "Football Greats" such as Ronnie Lott and John Lynch. In my opinion, it actually highlights a major difference between the violent collisions in American Football and controlled contact in Rugby. Hence the term "Elegant Violence"

Thhe only requirement for a rugby tackle is that it be below the shoulders, that you wrap with the arms and not be dangerous. There is no need for a big guy like you to go for the hips or legs. In fact, many of the worlds best will make a 'bear-hug' style tackle in an attempt to turn the ball carrier away from his teammates, making it easier for the opposition to win possession in a ruck.

The one thing I dont like about rugby is the necessity of the wrap tackle. Im a big guy and I hate going low and wasting my time when I can just smash him when standing. I understand why its used but its annoying
