Vic is dead right you need to support the ball carrier whenever you
have to. The first player to a point of contact needs to help
the ball carrier.

I actually think backs should know how to maul. "15 forwards, 15 backs". However, it's something you need to practice, like scrummaging or tackling, before implementing in a match.

Its generally not a good idea to join the maul if your a back unless your teams in trouble as vic mentions. Get into position and let the forwards do their job.

As with rucks, you must engage from the back of the maul. Depending on your team and experience level, your scrum half and/or captains can indicate when to join the maul. A good rule of thumb is to join if the maul is moving backwards or if the ball in danger of being poached by the opposition.
