Celtic Rugby have confirmed that they are in “advanced and positive discussions” with the South African Rugby Union (SARU) with the view to add two teams to the current PRO12 format.

A statement released on the official PRO12 website read “a final decision on this potential expansion will be confirmed as soon as practical” with the start of the new season nearing.

The expected teams to be named are the Cheetahs and the Southern Kings, who the SARU announced at the beginning of July would be axed from the Super Rugby competition.

The Cheetahs claimed four wins in 15 Super Rugby games this season, while the Kings claimed six.
