Bryn Gatland is in line to face his father’s British & Irish Lions in their tour opener after being included in the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians’ squad.
The Barbarians match opens the Lions’ 10-match tour of New Zealand on June 3 and includes players from 15 different provinces, including veteran Peter Rowe who currently runs out for Wanganui and Johnny Fa’auli who is in the Chiefs squad.
But the eye-catching inclusion is North Harbour fly-half Bryn, son of Lions coach Warren. He made his Super Rugby debut last weekend for the Blues and is set to face the tourists in their opening match in Whangarei.
“It was important to us in selecting this team that it was truly representative of New Zealand,” Barbarians coach Clayton McMillan said. “It wasn’t an easy task, the amount of talent considered is testament to how strong New Zealand rugby is now. We believe we have found a mix of upcoming players and hardened provincial stalwarts to make an exciting team.
“We have picked the base of a team that is capable of playing an entertaining brand of rugby which fits with the BaaBaas tradition of innovation and flair and playing with pure guts and heart.”
Further players will be added on May 28.
