The British & Irish Lions are tapping into Saracens’ winning mindset after drafting in their performance director Phil Morrow for a role on their tour of New Zealand.
Morrow, who arrived at Saracens in 2011 having been head of fitness at Ireland, joins Warren Gatland’s strength and conditioning team, where he will work under Phil Stridgeon.
“I’m unbelievably honoured to be asked to join the British & Irish Lions staff to tour New Zealand and I’d also like to thank our director of rugby Mark McCall and chairman Nigel Wray for allowing me to take up this incredibly exciting opportunity,” Morrow said.
There will be more than just a touch of Saracens about the Lions’ backroom staff with both Andy Farrell and Steve Borthwick on the coaching team. Farrell is a former coach and player at Saracens while Borthwick captained the side.
“Phil’s contribution to Saracens since he arrived at the club has been unbelievable,” Saracens boss Mark McCall said. “He’s the best in his field and it’s great to see that his talent has been recognised in this way. It’s a huge honour for Phil to link-up with the Lions and one that is well deserved — we’re all delighted for him and he has our full support for what is a once in a life time opportunity.”
