The Springboks have appointed Brendan Venter as their new defence coach.
Venter, who won 17 caps for South Africa, is expected to combine the role with his duties as consultant with Italy, having recently committed to that position until the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
He is regarded as one of the finest coaching brains and masterminded Italy’s ruckless tactic against England, a method labelled ‘the fox’ by Azzurri boss Conor O’Shea.
Venter, who replaces JP Ferreira, has huge experience having coached at London Irish, Saracens, Sharks and the Stormers and will take charge of South Africa’s defence and exit strategy.
“We know each other well since our time together at the DHL Stormers, and we share the same values. He will be responsible for defence and ‘exit’ strategies,” said Boks coach Allister Coetzee. “Brendan is passionate about Springbok rugby, and wants to help turn things around. He was part of my plans in 2016 already but, unfortunately, he was not available because of commitments elsewhere.
“We delayed confirming this appointment out of respect for Italy’s Six Nations campaign. The public delay did not interrupt our background planning.”
