Saracens and England fly-half Owen Farrell is nearing his return from a hip injury, according to Sarries director of rugby Mark McCall.

Farrell’s game management and kicking accuracy was missed at the weekend, as Saracens lost 17-10 to Northampton.

McCall says Farrell is likely to miss Friday’s clash with Bristol, but that his return is nearing.

“Owen is getting closer and closer, but with the length of the season it’s just madness to make a short term decision that might have long-term implications, so we’ll do the right thing,” McCall said.

“He did all the training last week, he just didn’t feel quite right and we’ll wait to he feels completely right in his own head before we play him. He’s mad keen to play.”

Farrell will be seeking a series of strong performances to ensure his place in Eddie Jones’ back-line come the Autumn internationals.
