Russia’s Enisei-STM stunned Newcastle Falcons in the Challenge Cup as they defeated Dean Richards’ men 24-7 in Sochi.

Enisei-STM have already beaten Brive in this year’s pool stage and the win over Newcastle is just the second time a team from outside the Six Nations have defeated a team from England’s top flight in the Challenge Cup.

Wild scenes of celebration in Sochi. Fair play, Enisei deserved that. However, it’s as bad a Newcastle performance as I’ve seen in ages

The hosts were 14-7 to the good at half-time after Denis Simplikevich and Davit Kacharava scored for Enisei-STM while Calum Green crossed for the Falcons. And the Russian side started the second-half the better of the two sides with Kacharava getting his second in the 42nd minute. Newcastle’s attempts to get themselves back into the match were not helped by Mouritz Botha’s 47th minute yellow card.

Zebre stunned Worcester, winning 22-15 at Sixways. Kayle van Zyl scored Zebre’s only try of the game after 17 minutes with Kelly Haimona, Ulrich Beyers and Edoardo Padovani knocking over the rest of the points from the tee. Worcester crossed twice with Luke Baldwin and Dean Hammond scoring but failed to pin back the deficit.

Grenoble held off a late London Irish rally to win 28-18 at the Madejski Stadium. Grenoble were at one stage 28-6 to the good thanks to tries from Armand Batlle, Nigel Hunt and Charl McLeod but the Exiles scored twice in the last 10 minutes with Dominic Waldouck and Alex Lewington crossing.
