O'Shea: England must pick Danny Care

Conor O’Shea has urged England head coach Eddie Jones to look closely at Harlequins captain Danny Care when selecting his scrum-half for the RBS 6 Nations.

Care has made a dashing start to the season and is competing with Joe Simpson of Wasps for recognition as the most dangerous running nine in the Aviva Premiership who is qualified for England. The 29-year-old leads Quins for Sunday’s trip to Worcester and director of rugby O’Shea insists he is indispensable to the club.

“Danny was brilliant against Gloucester last weekend. When the going got tough he really chucked himself into tackles to make the difference,” O’Shea said. “He’s such a threat and I would never put a team out without him involved somewhere in the 23.

“Everyone is asking, ‘who is Eddie Jones looking at?’ Well Danny is an absolutely magnificent rugby player.”

Worcester are searching for their third Premiership victory of the season and director of rugby Dean Ryan believes stopping Care will be key to their hopes of springing an upset.

“We’ve got a unique challenge defensively to cope with Harlequins’ speed of thought,” Ryan said. “Danny Care and Nick Evans play with an incredible tempo. The team play with a level of freedom that can catch you by surprise if you assume anything.

“But we’re at home and I’d like to think we can put a few things together that can put them under pressure.”
